What if someone told you that in Metro Detroit, over 16% of residents report using illicit drugs each year—and nearly 10% meet the criteria for a substance use disorder?
Or that thousands of children are still waiting in foster care for a family to call their own?
All in your own backyard?
It might sound dramatic—but it’s the hard reality facing the Detroit Metro Area today.
The David and Mary Stafford Foundation believes compassion without awareness is useless.
By sharing the data—and integrating faith-driven action—we hope to inspire Christian donors in Metro Detroit to step in and help turn the tide.
A National Epidemic: Addiction & Foster Care
Some sobering national statistics:
48.5 million Americans experienced a substance use disorder last year.
Over 390,000 children are currently in foster care in the United States.
More than 1 million couples are waiting to adopt a child.
These aren’t just numbers—they represent lives in crisis and momentary triumphs waiting to happen.
Metro Detroit in Focus: The Local Crisis
The Detroit–Warren–Livonia Metropolitan Area is home to nearly 3.9 million residents, spread across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.
But behind that population lies a troubling reality:
Roughly 16.6% of residents aged 12 and older used illicit drugs in the past year—a rate higher than the national average (14.7%)
9.6% of those 18+ reported a substance use disorder—versus the U.S. average of 7.0%
In Wayne County alone, alcohol topped 34% of treatment admissions, with heroin, cocaine, meth, and opioids accounting for nearly 60% of reported drug-related ER.
On the other hand, the need for orphans is equally urgent:
Michigan's foster care system—primarily in Metro Detroit—hosts thousands of children awaiting permanency.
Triaging these needs is a challenge, but with over 1 million couples nationwide waiting to adopt, the potential to connect loving homes with waiting children is real.
Faith & Data: A Blueprint for Hope
Numbers are important—but they should move us to action, not paralysis.
Here’s how the David and Mary Stafford Foundation is combining faith, strategy, and heart to address the crisis in Metro Detroit:
